“The Way We Were” - A monster worldwide #1 hit from 1974, taken from her hit movie of the same name. Listen to Barbra’s definitive version HERE (Also check out the Youtube version of the song by co-writer Karen Lawrence HERE - even more dramatic!)ĥ. Originally, Barbra was considering starring in this movie, but decided against it, and the role went to the amazing Faye Dunaway. “Love Theme From ‘The Eyes of Laura Mars’ (Prisoner)” - Haunting song and a brilliant vocal performance come together in this soundtrack single which hit #21 in 1978. This single showcases a gospel flavor, which showed up a number of times on her seventies albums, including songs like “Jubilation” and “Grandma’s Hands.” Watch this performance complete with gospel singers and Ray Charles on the piano HEREĦ. Barbra had a #40 with the studio version of “Where You Lead” a few years earlier, but this live version from her “Live Concert at the Forum” album.
Sweet Inspiration/Where You Lead” - A #37 hit from 1972, which is a live medley of two amazing songs. Reached #4 on the Hot 100 charts in 1977, and is taken from her excellent “Streisand Superman” album. “My Heart Belongs to Me” - Another simple ballad that is filled with emotional heartache (“I’ve got the feeling, the feeling’s gone…”). This melancholy ballad would set the tone for a number of Barbra songs during this decade - a sense of forlorn yearning for love (see also #8 and #6 on this list as well). “Songbird” - A #25 hit from her 1978 album of the same name. A perfect combination of the right song with the right singers. The story of a radio dj mashing two solo versions together to create the duet, which goes on to top the charts, is now legendary, as is their Grammy performance. “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” - This duet with Neil Diamond reached number 1 in 1978. Note, this list is only from her official singles, not all the songs from her 70’s albums (that would be a completely different list!), and only releases from the 1970’s. As a certified expert in all things Barbra, here are my Top 10 Barbra Streisand singles of the 1970’s. In the 1970’s alone, she released a total of 18 singles, four of which went to #1 on the Hot 100, and 18 albums (including greatest hits collections, live albums, and movie soundtracks). Sometimes though, when the arrangement doesn’t quite gel or the song no longer fits the tone of the album it was meant for, the tapes go into the vault for safekeeping.Barbra Streisand was a queen of the 1970’s (and one of my absolute favorite singers). “Whenever that kind of magic happens, it’s extremely satisfying. In the album notes, the singer writes: “For me, the studio is a combination musical playground and laboratory… a private sanctuary, where the possibility of catching lightning in a bottle always exists. The track was originally intended for her 2014 duets album ‘Partners’, but Streisand ended up recruiting Blake Shelton to join her in the studio as Nelson’s part wasn’t ready by her release deadline. sTllT8crle- Barbra Streisand June 2, 2021 Release Me 2 – Coming August 6 – A new collection containing previously unreleased tracks from Barbra’s vault.
